Illegal data is often sold on the dark web, including stolen password credentials and personal data. Therefore, it is important that you protect your personal data at all times when using the Internet. Here are our tips to stay safe online.
1. When making online payments, check that the website is secure. Secure websites start with "https", which means they have an SSL certificate. Before making a purchase, look for the padlock symbol in the search bar.
2. Make sure your virus software and computer patches are up to date. If you don't have enough antivirus software, your information could be hacked without you knowing it.
3. Use complex passwords. Keep your passwords varied, using a range of upper and lower case characters and including symbols. This makes your passwords stronger and less likely to be hacked.
4. Don't click on links or open attachments from people you don't trust, whether in email, text or on websites.
5. Reduce the amount of personal information you share online. This could include your birthday, your pet's name, or your address, as these details could be used for fraud.
