What is the country with the most Twitter users?
The social network Twitter is particularly popular in the United States, with an audience of 76.9 million tweeters as of January 2022. Perhaps surprisingly, Japan is a close second in terms of active users. Japan and India rank second and third with more than 58 and 23.6 million users, respectively.
A 2019 study by the Pew Research Center found that far more men than women use
Twitter, and that 22 percent of American adults who use Twitter are younger, better
educated and more likely to be Democrats than the general public.
Other
studies have shown that Twitter users are unevenly distributed around the world,
with the social media platform more popular in some countries than others.
Global Twitter Usage
As of Q2 2021, Twitter had 206
million monetizable daily active users worldwide. The most followed Twitter accounts
include celebrities such as Katy Perry, Justin Bieber and former U.S. President
Barack Obama.
Twitter and Politics
Twitter has
become an increasingly important tool in national and international politics. The
platform has become a way to promote policies and interact with citizens and other
officials, and most world leaders and foreign ministries have official Twitter
accounts. Former U.S. President Donald Trump was a prolific Twitter user before the
platform permanently deactivated his account in January 2021. In an August 2018
survey, 61 percent of respondents said Trump's use of Twitter as president of the
United States was inappropriate.
